Igor Spassky, who for many years was the chief designer at the Central Design Bureau of Naval Equipment “Rubin”, has died at the age of 98, the St. Petersburg authorities announced.

Russian submarine designer Igor Spassky, according to whose plans more than 200 nuclear and diesel-electric submarines were built, has died, St. Petersburg authorities said on Tuesday.

Spassky was 98 years old. He had been working on submarine design since the 1950s.

From 1974 to 2007 he headed the Central Design Bureau of Marine Equipment “Rubin”.

In 2001, he led the operation to raise the nuclear submarine Kursk, which sank on August 12, 2000 in the Barents Sea along with its 118-person crew.
