Thomas Bach has been president of the International Olympic Committee since September 2013. During his reign, three editions of the Games were held – in 2016, 2021 and 2024. His term will end next year and he will be replaced by someone new. For several months, the media have been reporting that it may be a Pole. In fact, they even indicated a specific name. Quite surprisingly, there was talk about Andrzej Duda, the current president of the Republic of Poland.
– I understand that Andrzej Duda is looking for something to do after his presidency. However, I advise you to look for something real – This is what Aleksander Kwaśniewski said about this topic. – It seems to me that the best formula is when an outstanding athlete from the past becomes the head of the IOC – added Sławomir Nitras, Minister of Sport and Tourism. And ultimately, Duda was not on the list of candidates for the position of IOC president, but this does not mean that the politician will not be active in the organization.
Andrzej Duda close to the IOC? The Polish Olympic Committee has decided. All clear!
On Thursday, surprising information was revealed. Andrzej Duda aspires to join the IOC after his term ends. In fact, the first steps in its favor have already been taken and it is becoming more and more realistic.
As reported “Przegląd Sportowy Onet”The Management Board of the Polish Olympic Committee adopted a resolution recommending Duda as a member of the IOC. Łukasz Jachimiak from Sport.pl managed to find out a little more about this matter. It turns out that the recommendation concerns an eight-year term. We also know how the votes were distributed. And it turns out that out of 36 people, as many as 26 supported the candidacy of the President of the Republic of Poland. Six abstained from voting and only four were against.
This will open up new opportunities for Duda, who no longer has a chance for re-election in the presidential elections. Those who will compete for his job include, among others: Rafał Trzaskowski, Karol Nawrocki and Szymon Hołownia. Duda has held this position since 2015, when he replaced Bronisław Komorowski. Five years later, he won the elections, defeating Trzaskowski in the decisive battle.
The Russians wrote about Duda, but in terms of the possible chairmanship of the IOC
This decision of the Polish Olympic Committee will certainly be widely echoed throughout Poland and beyond. Already, people reacted to the reports that Duda may run for president of the IOC. Russians. – The head of the World Anti-Doping Agency is a Pole, Witold Bańka. That's enough. Let the Poles try to take over the power in the IOC. For us, every change in international sports institutions is a hope for a change for the better. However, we cannot expect a positive attitude towards Russia from the Polish candidate for the head of the IOC – Yevgeny Arkhipov, president of the Russian Rowing Federation, said a few weeks ago.
