The flight of Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski must wait. NASA said that the Sunday date, when the Axiom 4 mission will be able to start, would not take place. As he explains in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl, science popularizer Dr. Tomasz Rożek, this type of situation in the space flight industry is “quite standard”.

American Space Agency on Friday NASA She informed that Sunday, i.e. the earliest date for the possible start of the Axiom 4 mission with Polish astronaut, doctor Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski, would not be implemented. As a reason, the agency indicated that “additional time was needed to continue the assessment of the international space station (ISS) after recent repair work in the rear segment of the Zawizda service module”. The new, probable date of starting the mission with a Pole on board has not been given at the time – this is to be done in the following days.

The Pole's flight moves back in time

Start of the Axiom 4 mission with four astronauts, i.e. Peggy Whitson with the USA, Tibor kapu with Hungarian and Shubhanshu Shukla from India and a Pole was to be held on May 29, but since then he was postponed many times. Last week, inappropriate weather was responsible for changing the dates, as well as technical problems related to the Falcon 9 rocket and Dragon capsule, which is provided by SpaceX.

Later, however, there was a problem with air leakage and a decrease in pressure in the Russian ISS module. And although the problem was to be resolved, the mission was again postponed this week due to the necessary observations and checking whether the repair was made in the right way.

Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski cannot fly yet. “It's complicated”

Is this type of postponement during space missions extraordinary? As the science popularizer explained, Dr. Tomasz Rożek from the “Science. It likes” foundation, so that the flight takes place, there must be many different things that they have to ride at the same time.

– Because it is complicated, there are a lot of procedures. This is not just a matter of the rocket itself or the capsule, it is also a matter of weather, and as we talk about this aspect, it is both at the earth's surface and in the higher layers of the atmosphere. If all this is fine, it also does not guarantee 100 % success of the mission start. There is also a destination point, i.e. an international space station, which must also meet the right conditions, there can be no problems there – said Rożek in an interview with tvnmeteo.pl.

As the expert admitted, this time it happened that the weather and then a rocket, which had leaks, became a problem. However, this was not the end of trouble.

– Now it turns out that the problem is with the tightness of the space station itself. And regardless of whether it would be such a rocket or different, whether it is a mission of Axiom or any other, then any rocket can do there. In case of a problem with the tightness of the space station itself, people who are there must first of all deal with repairing the fault and monitoring the situation. Only later can they possibly accept more people – he said.

Flights into space. “We have no choice, Space Is Hard”

According to Rożek, the constant distract of the Axiom-4 mission start is a “quite standard situation”. – Space flights are shifted much more often than they take place according to plan, so in this respect it is nothing non -standard. We have no choice Space is hard he admitted.

Can the movement of the mission start be frustrating for crew members? As the interlocutor tvnmeteo.pl assures, they are practiced not to experience it like that.

– These emotions cannot be suddenly beyond control because of something like that, because astronauts are trained to much worse situations than such that the mission will take place a week or a month later. This is not something rare or unexpected enough to surprise them – the expert admitted. “They must keep cold in even more stressful situations (…),” he said.

The horn added that the shift of the flight does not seem the most drastic option of all possible.

– It's a bit like we perceive this future flight through the prism of our own experience. We are going somewhere, for example on vacation, we are putting up all this, such as holidays, we are packed. And suddenly it turns out that the train we have to go is late an hour. Blood is cooking in man. Astronauts cannot react like this, because if it would hit them from the rhythm, they expose themselves and other mission participants to danger – he said.

Axiom-4 mission

The mission to set off from the NASA Kennedy Space Center center in Florida is the fourth commercial flight at Axiom ISS. Astronauts – former Astronaut NASA Peggy Whitson (commander), pilot Shubhanshu Shukla from India and specialists scientists Sławosz Uznański -Wiśniewski and Tibor of Kapu from Hungary – will spend up to 14 days to ISS, performing about 60 scientific experiments, including 13 prepared by Polish scientists. The Crew Dragon capsule, created by Spacex, will fly to the station, for which it will be the first flight in cosmos. Uznański-Wiśniewski will be the first Polish astronaut at an international space station.
