It turned white in Šumperk in the north of the Czech Republic on Sunday. However, the snowfall was not caused by weather conditions.
Light snowfall occurred in Šumperk in the Olomouc Region on Sunday morning. A photo released by the national hydrometeorological institute (CHMU) shows a thin white layer at a railway station.
Typically, snow is formed when the temperature in the cloud drops to zero degrees Celsius or below. Crystallization then occurs, during which the water vapor turns into ice crystals. It was different this time.
Industrial snow
The so-called industrial snow fell in a Czech city. It is created under appropriate conditions as a result of human activity. It appears near industrial plants whose byproduct is water vapor. “It can occur in low cloud cover or fog if there is a source of moisture in the area, such as a power plant chimney,” said Martin Adamovsky of CHMU.
“It is a very local phenomenon, but it is not uncommon for several centimeters of snow to fall in this way. In extreme cases, it can be even several dozen centimeters” – wrote on the X website.
