More than a hundred flights were canceled at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam. The cause is the strong winds accompanying the Darragh hurricane. Serious difficulties also occurred in rail and road traffic.
The Dutch Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a weather warning for most of the country on Friday, predicting strong winds with gusts of 75 to 90 kilometers per hour. In coastal areas, forecasters expect even stronger gusts – on the Frisian Islands, winds are expected to reach speeds of up to 120 km/h.
Communication problems
As reported by Reuters, the authorities of Schiphol International Airport in Amsterdam canceled over 100 flights on Friday due to strong winds. Many flights are delayed and airport authorities have confirmed that their number may increase.
The management of the Dutch airport explained that the flight cancellations were caused by the Darragh hurricane. Passengers were urged to take into account possible travel complications and to contact the airline to check whether their flight had been canceled before arriving at the airport.
The storm disrupted not only air travel, but also road and rail travel. ProRail, the Dutch railway infrastructure operator, reported extensive problems caused by fallen trees on the tracks.
