Monday brought violent weather in France. In Lyon there were winds of 125 kilometers per hour. Gusty winds destroyed the roof of a gas station located near this city.

Level 2 wind warnings were in force in nine French departments on Monday morning. The report stated that the wind would blow at a speed of 110 kilometers per hour, with gusts up to 120 km/h. Level 2 alerts remained in force for the Loire and Rhône departments in the evening.

“The wind remains strong in the eastern part of the country, but is starting to weaken,” the French meteorological service Meteo France said on Monday.

Destruction near Lyon

In Lyon, in the central-eastern part of the country, winds reached a speed of 125 km/h. Strong winds broke branches and knocked down trees, which resulted in the suspension of tram lines. Losses caused by strong winds were also reported in other regions of France. In the Isère department, roofs were damaged – several of them belonged to supermarkets and one to a secondary school. In addition, a truck trailer was found lying on the road on the A47 motorway, blown away by the wind. This caused traffic jams on the Lyon-Saint-Etienne route.

As a result of the violent weather, power outages were reported. In the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, 15,000 homes were without electricity, and 7,400 in Burgundy.
