The Swedish Prime Minister's adviser on national security, Henrik Landerholm, may have disclosed state secrets by forgetting to take important documents after one of the meetings, “Dagens Nyheter” reported on Wednesday. The daily noted that this was the third incident of this kind involving this politician.
According to the daily, in March 2023, Henrik Landerholm forgot to take four documents from the manor house in Gaelloefsta north of Stockholm, where an internal meeting was held. At least one of them was classified secret. This means – the newspaper points out – that the content is so confidential that its disclosure could harm security Sweden. The materials were later found by his colleagues.
In 2022-2023, the Swedish government made diplomatic overtures in response to the opposition Turkeyand then the passivity of the authorities Hungarian on the road to Stockholm NATO.
Three incidents
“Dagens Nyheter” notes that this was not the first case of this type involving a politician. Earlier – in the fall of 2022 – an adviser to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson lost his mobile phone at the Hungarian Embassy in Stockholm. The official recovered the lost item only the next day. However, in January 2023, Landerholm left a notebook after an interview on Swedish Radio.
The daily reports that the case of the loss of secret documents in March should have been reported to the police, but this did not happen. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson called the incidents “minor”.
Landerholm has been the prime minister's adviser on national security since autumn 2022, and previously headed the Psychological Defense Agency.
The chairman of the Defense Committee, Peter Hultqvist, assessed that “there is a friendship between Ulf Kristersson and Henrik Landerholm, which has been clear from the moment of his appointment to this position.” – It is possible that this affects Kristersson's assessment in these contexts. The actions taken so far are not sufficient and reasonable, he told the newspaper.
