A 30-year-old Pole who was swept away by a waterfall while bathing in the Thur River in Switzerland has died, local authorities have announced. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The incident occurred on Saturday after 3 p.m., the Swiss police reported the same day. According to preliminary findings, five people were bathing in the Thur River in the canton of St. Gallen. Among them was a man who was carried away by the current and fell into the nearby Felsegg waterfall. According to media reports, the four other people who were bathing in the river were unable to come to his aid due to the “dangerous conditions.”

Pole carried away by a waterfall

Rescuers found and extracted the body of the deceased man late Saturday evening using a crawler excavator. The deceased was identified as a 30-year-old Pole who permanently resides in the canton of Thurgau. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The portal of the newspaper “St. Galler Tagblatt” writing about the death of the Pole noted that the section of the Thur River above the Felsegg Falls is a popular place for swimming in the summer. “However, the impressive spectacle of nature poses a threat to the lives of bathers,” we read. The portal also recalled that the local waterfall had already carried away two people in 2020 – then neither survived.
