As the rescuer of the Tatra Volunteer Ambulance Service Łukasz Zubek, fatal accidents took place in Rysy – tourists fell from a great height in a steep, frozen snow. Their bodies were transported on board the helicopter to Zakopane on Sunday morning.

Icing in the Tatra Mountains

After night frosts in the Tatra Mountains, there are icing in many places. Despite the sunny weather, the conditions in the higher parts of the mountains remain difficult – there are extensive patches of hard, frozen snow, especially in the High Tatras and on the north side of the massifs. The services call for special caution – it is very slippery.

Wandering in higher parts, it is necessary to have experience in winter mountain tourism, the ability to assess local avalanche threat and appropriate equipment: Raków, Czekan, helmet and avalanche set (detector, probe, spatula). The first degree of avalanche threat applies.

On the lower trails, the snow has mostly melted, but in shaded places they can still persist. During the day, when the earth is dreaming, the trails become wet and muddy places.
