The body of a soldier who went missing while swimming in the sea near Wicko Morskie on Monday has been found, the 18th Mechanized Division reported. The 27-year-old was a soldier of voluntary compulsory military service from the 18th Reconnaissance Battalion from Biała Podlaska.

“It is with deep regret that we inform you that today the body of a soldier from the 18th Reconnaissance Battalion was found, who on August 5 this year, during his free time, went missing while swimming in the sea in Wicko Morskie. The soldier's family has been provided with psychological care,” the 18th Mechanized Division reported on Platform X on Wednesday evening.

The press officer of the Szczecin branch of the Military Gendarmerie, Major Tomasz Zygmunt, informed on Tuesday that “the incident took place in a military area, near Wicko Morskie“.

As he said, on Monday evening the soldier went to the training ground beach to swim. He added that “the circumstances indicate drowning.”

The spokesman for the Maritime Search and Rescue Service SAR, Rafał Goeck, informed that the search for the soldier with the participation of WOPR and SAR rescuers lasted on Monday until 10:30 p.m.

– We received a report that there was a man in the water at the Wicko Morskie training ground who was being “drawn” into the sea – Goeck reported.

The rescue and search operation involved the rescue ships “Tajfun” from Darłowo and “Orkan” from Ustka, rescuers on a pontoon, firefighters, policemen, and soldiers. Goeck emphasized that the conditions in the Baltic Sea were difficult. – Sea state: three to four (3-4 degrees on the Beaufort scale). In such conditions, a red flag is displayed at bathing areas – said the SAR spokesman.

On Tuesday morning, the place where the man went missing was searched by a Navy helicopter.

Maj. Tomasz Zygmunt said the 27-year-old is a soldier of voluntary compulsory military service from the 18th Reconnaissance Battalion from Biała Podlaska. He had been serving since June of this year.

The circumstances of the incident are being investigated under the supervision of the Szczecin Niebuszewo District Prosecutor’s Office.
