Hungary under Orbán is becoming a country for fallen dictators and wanted criminals – says the leader of the Hungarian opposition, who, according to polls, has a chance to win the next elections there, about the Marcin Romanowski case. If Orban does not extradite Romanowski to Poland, even though he is formally obliged to do so, would his successor do it? But can it happen faster?

Poland will go to court if Hungary does not extradite Marcin Romanowski, announces Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Andrzej Szejna. – We are determined to take Hungary to the Court of Justice of the European Union – says the politician.

A complaint to the CJEU is a tedious and time-consuming procedure, but it will certainly be another element putting pressure – both on Orban and Romanowski himself.

– Let Mr. Romanowski have no doubts. He is a man wanted in Poland and will be a man wanted abroad – reminds Cezary Tomczyk, Deputy Minister of National Defense. – Mr. Romanowski is obliged to return to Poland, from which he escaped, as soon as possible and turn himself in to the justice system – emphasizes the Marshal of the Sejm, Szymon Hołownia.

Romanowski gives an ultimatum

Romanowski is wanted on an arrest warrant and the prosecutor's office brings a number of charges against him, including participation in an organized criminal group. The former deputy minister fled to Hungary, where he received asylum, but in accordance with EU law, the Hungarian government is obliged to execute the European Arrest Warrant. Brussels has already intervened in this matter. A possible CJEU judgment may cost Orban's government dearly.

– If Orban plays in Putin's orchestra, maybe if he is cut off from European funds, his pipe will soften a bit – comments Tomasz Trela, an MP from the Left.

For now, Marcin Romanowski does not intend to return himself, he broadcasts secretly on social media. He sets conditions for Poland, and PiS supports him in this.

– Most often, the guilty people escape, so I guess Mr. Romanowski admitted his guilt in this way – says Marcin Kierwiński, government plenipotentiary for reconstruction after the flood. – We are not dealing with the justice system at the moment, but with the justice system – says Piotr Kaleta, an MP from Law and Justice.

The case is heating up political emotions. PiS talks about a lawless state, the coalition about betrayal. Only the PiS candidate for president doesn't know what to say. – Mr. Nawrocki, who is supposed to be the PiS candidate for president, is going there to pardon people like Romanowski – believes Cezary Tomczyk.

The topic is becoming more and more popular in Hungary

The topic is also becoming more and more popular in Hungary. It is true that the media subordinated to Orban does not say much about him, but the television independent of the government gives a voice to the opposition leader, who says that asylum for Romanowski will involve Hungary in an international scandal.

– It is increasingly typical of Viktor Orban's regime that it welcomes fallen dictators and wanted criminals (…) I think it is truly heartbreaking that Hungary is embroiled in such an international scandal – says Péter Magyar, Hungarian MEP and leader of the opposition party .

– Hungary is moving away from its allies at its own request. Poland was one of our closest allies. I don't know how it will all end, comments Szabolcs Panyi, a Hungarian journalist.

In a year and a half, there will be parliamentary elections in Hungary. For the first time in 14 years, the opposition has a real chance of winning. The topic of asylum for a Polish politician with allegations is already an element of the campaign.

– If Orban is not aware yet, he will soon begin to realize that he may lose the elections because he will show that he is afraid of these settlements. And they are also important for the Hungarian opposition, points out Agnieszka Pomaska, an MP from the Civic Coalition.
