Russia is interested in games: As many as 80 million Russians from various social and age groups play games. Every fourth (23%) Russian is a regular player – according to the VTsIOM study. Even the Kremlin is aware of the power of this phenomenon. President Russia Vladimir Putin demands greater control over the computer games market. He explained that it was necessary to “prevent the spread of distorted ideas about historical events and about Russia's place and role in the world.”

The Russians took on the gaming market in two ways: First of all, at the end of last year it was revealed that it was commissioned president Work on a Russian game console is underway. Mainly Russian games will be available there. However, Anton Gorelkin from the State Duma admitted that “for now” the processors are not at a level that would allow for equal competition with PS5 and Xbox. That's why the Russians are supposed to act “unconventionally.” Not much is known about the new console yet, but it has already earned the mocking name “Putindo 64” among gamers. “The Russian console is not created to transfer a hundred old games there and report on the execution of the President's orders,” Gorelkin assured.

The second issue is regulations: The Russians want to impose two obligations on game producers. First, they will require players to be notified about the presence of foul language, scenes of violence, cruelty, alcohol or cigarettes in the game, as well as whether the game may cause fear, terror or panic. However, what is more controversial are video game distributors in Russia obliged to identify users using the so-called Gosuservices, biometric data or telephone number. This obligation will also apply to foreign producers who want to sell games in Russia. There weren't many of them left after, among others, they left the market. SonyMicrosoft and Nintendo. Russians fear that the adoption of new regulations will further limit the inflow of foreign games into the country.
