The United States imposed restrictions on 118 people and entities from Russia's financial sector on Thursday, including full sanctions on Gazprombank, the last major Russian bank not yet subject to a full blockade, the White House announced on Thursday.
“Today, the United States is imposing significant new sanctions on more than 50 financial institutions to further weaken Russia's ability to use the international financial system to finance and wage a brutal war against the people of Ukraine,” the national security adviser said in a statement. Jake Sullivan.
As he emphasized, among the institutions subject to restrictions is Gazprombank, the largest Russian bank so far USA they did not impose sanctions.
New entities on the sanctions list
Gazprombank is the third largest bank Russiathrough which Moscow settles payments for the purchase of military equipment and pays soldiers and their families. Although partial sanctions have been imposed on it, it has not yet been subject to the full blockade and exclusion from the SWIFT system that was applied to other banks. This was related to concerns about the impact of sanctions on further deliveries of Russian gas to Europe. According to a statement from the US Ministry of Finance, over 50 Russian banks with international connections, over 40 securities registers used by Russia to circumvent restrictions, as well as 15 people from the management of Russian state banks have been added to the sanctions list. Additionally, an alert was issued warning companies about the risk of sanctions related to the use of the Russian SPFS settlement system, which is intended to be an alternative to the international SWIFT system.
“We will continue to take all possible steps.”
“Today's sanctions will further curb Russia's abuse of the international financial system to finance its war against Ukraine. The United States remains committed to ensuring Ukraine is in the strongest possible position, and we will continue to take every step possible to do so, from dramatically increasing security assistance to imposing and fully enforcing sanctions and other restrictions on Russia's war machine,” Sullivan said in a statement.
