Traces of trimetazidine were detected in Iga Świątek's body. It is a drug used to treat ischemic heart disease and labyrinth disorders. But Shelf there are no cardiac problems. It turned out that the melatonin she had been prescribed by her doctor was contaminated with trimetazidine. Świątek proved that she did not deliberately take doping and is innocent. The Polish woman was suspended for one month for detecting an illegal substance in her body.
Kyrgios outraged about Świątek
Świątek's case concerned a sample from August 12, which was taken during a tournament in Cincinnati. The results came to the Polish woman a month later. Then the battle to clear the name of the Polish tennis player began. As a result, she lost tournaments in Seoul, Beijing and Wuhan as well as her lead in the WTA ranking. But the most important thing is that the whole situation was clarified relatively quickly and it was shown that Świątek did not take doping on purpose and consciously. This was confirmed by laboratory tests.
The Pole received a lot of words of support from fansathletes and in the tennis environment. But there are also those who are disgusted by how short Swiatek's suspension lasted. They accuse the use of double standards by tennis federations and ITIA, i.e. the International Integrity Agency Tennis. As examples, they cited events with Jannik Sinner, Simona Halep and Kamil Majchrzak. In the Italian's case, the matter was resolved relatively quickly and did not affect his tournament plans. However, the Romanian and the Pole lost several months of their careers.
Nick Kyrgios also drew attention to double standards. He believes that the one-month suspension for Świątek is too short a period compared to others tennis players.
“Our sport is ruined,” he wrote indignantly on social media. In the next post on Twitter, he continued his argument. He made it clear that anti-doping rules should be absolute and strict for everyone – regardless of whether they are proven guilty or not. He thinks it's positive results tests of two of the world's top tennis players have a negative impact on the entire tennis world, even if Świątek and Sinner unknowingly took banned substances.
“The excuse we can all use is that we didn't know. We just didn't know. Professionals at the highest level of sport can now simply say, 'We didn't know,'” he commented.
Kyrgios was one of Sinner's first critics when the Italian's doping scandal came to light. Back then, there was a lack of transparency and consistency in the activities of ITIA and the tennis player's camp.
Such entries by Kyrgios do not help build a good atmosphere before the World Tennis League. During the tournament in Abu Dhabi, the Australian will play with Świątek in one team (Team Eagles). Hubert Hurkacz and Barbora Krejcikova will play with them.
