On Saturday in the Tatra Mountains there were two dangerous accidents. As the Tatra Volunteer Ambulance Service, despite the cheerful aura, the conditions in the mountains are difficult. During trips, we should be careful and have the necessary equipment with us.

Rescuers warn that in Tatras There are currently difficult spring conditions. In the upper parts of the mountains there is still snow – in the morning and in shady places it is very hard, and on sunny slopes it gets wet and unstable. On such an unstable surface, it's easy to slip or lose your balance.

Two dangerous accidents

Before noon, Tatra rescuers were called to the valley under the wheel, where the tourist fell from a high height as a result of slipping on the trail between Zawrat and Świnica. The woman suffered injuries, including head and was transported by helicopter to the hospital in Zakopane.

A moment later, a tourist leaving Zadni Grenade needed help. He fell into deep, wet snow, lost his balance and wounded with cancer in the leg.

Safety in the mountains

The forecasts announce sunny weather for the entire holiday period, which can encourage mountain expeditions. TOPR reminds, however, that on many trails, especially in higher parts, it is slippery and wet. The first degree of avalanche threat applies in the peaks.

Mountain rescuers call for caution and remind you that tourists must have the right equipment to move in the upper parts of the Tatra Mountains: crayfish, ice ax, helmet and avalanche ABC. Dangerous conditions prevail, among others On the black trail to the Valley of Five Ponds, which is icy. It is recommended to use an alternative green trail.

In the lower parts, the snow has already melted mostly, but the trails are muddy and slippery places, including Around the Morskie Oko and in the direction of Czarny Staw near Rysami. TPN also warns against entering the dreaming panes of Tatra joints – thin ice may break down.
