The Nashville branch of the National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that a tornado had passed through the campus. It was accompanied by gusts of over 75 miles per hour and a funnel that touched down for over three miles. Interestingly, the tornado itself did not cause any major damage, but it was accompanied by strong downdrafts that caused minor damage in the downtown area. There were no reports of injuries.
“This is the first tornado recorded in July in Rutherford County. Official records of tornadoes date back to 1950, and unofficial records date back to the 19th century,” meteorologists said.
