Will the fee disappeared by Poles disappear?
The Ministry of Culture is to soon refer to public consultations a draft media act, one of which is the liquidation of a radio and television subscription – “Fakt” found out. Before her, however, a long legislative process, so that the RTV subscription will disappear next year, there is nothing to count on. Especially that by the end of July, the National Broadcasting Council must issue a regulation on the amount of subscription fees. And for now it has not been affected by a project to liquidate this subscription. This was also not provided for in the Budget Act for next year.
Political support for the liquidation of the RTV subscription
Already seventeen years ago Donald Tusk opposed this subscription. – The radio and television subscription is an archaic way of financing public media, tribute to people – he said in 2008 the topic of its liquidation returned in the campaign before the parliamentary elections. It prevented mainly the third way. His liquidation was promised by Szymon Hołownia, presenting the document “New Public Media”. In 2023, i.e. during the previous term, a civic project assuming the liquidation of this fee, got stuck in Parliament. Now theoretically, his vote should be easier because row He is more favorable to the abolition of the subscription, and the idea has the support of the opposition confederation.
Poles do not pay this subscription anyway
The main argument for the liquidation of this fee is the fact that in practice hardly anyone actually pays it, even though it is mandatory. The National Broadcasting Council has published a report, which shows that only 32.1 percent obliged households and companies regulated fees Subscription in 2024. Marek Rutka, MP of the left and a member of the National Media Council, simply said that the subscription in this form is simply ineffective. – His collection by Poczta Polska is expensive, a large group is released from paying the subscription, and a large part of people are evading it. We are in favor of taking a subscription in a fee for electricity or adding to the annual tax Pit. According to our calculations, such a fee would be PLN 8.60 per month and this amount would cover the functioning of public television and radio stations – he proposed in 2023. Currently, the radio and TV fee is PLN 27.30 per month.
