Donald Trump imposed duties on over 180 countries and world territories. Among them are small islands, completely uninhabited by people. These are Islands of Heard and McDonald, located near Antarctica, inhabited by a large penguin population. The White House referred to the matter.

On Wednesday Donald Trump signed a regulation providing for imposing customs duties on goods Imported from a total of 185 countries and territories of the world. The document assumes a minimum 10 % basic rate for all countries and additional duties for the majority. A 20 % tariff has been applied to the European Union.

In the island list inhabited only by penguins
The list of countries covered by the duties included, among others Islands of Heard and McDonald, which received a rate of 10 percent. As “Guardian” notes, it is an external territory Australiawhich was indicated as a separate country and was also covered by a 10 % duty.
This volcanic territory, however, is completely uninhabited by people. The islands, located near Antarctica, are effective and are characterized by a large population of penguins. According to the newspaper, you can only get there after a two -week journey by Łódź from Australia. In practice, however, most likely a man's last visit to the islets took place a decade ago. “Politico” adds that the Australian authorities recognize the islands as “one of the least anthropogenically violated areas in the world”.
Australian media indicate that no goods are exported from Heard and McDonald islands. According to Advisor.travel, the island of Heard is very mountainous and inhospitable. McDonald Islands are small and rocky. The total area of the territory is about 412 km². There is no harbor or port on any of the islands.
Uninhabited territories on the Trump list
In addition to the list of Australia, including the coconut islands, Christmas Island and the island of Norfolk, were also included in the list. The latter, inhabited by 2.1 thousand people, there was a tariff of as much as 29 percent. – With all due respect, but I am not entirely sure if the island of Norfolk is a commercial competitor for the gigantic economy of the United States. This only shows that it is nowhere to be safe in the world – the Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said on Thursday. – I'm not sure what is the main export product of the Norfolk island to USA And why it was awarded, but it happened – he added.
When asked by “Politico” about commentary on the case, representatives of the White House replied that Norfolk and the islands of Heard and McDonald are on the list because they are the territories of Australia.
The portal notes that the ranking also includes, for example, the British territory of the Indian Ocean, i.e. uninhabited islands that are the dependent territory of Great Britain, as well as with less than 3,000. residents of the Norwegian Archipelago Svalbard and island Jan Mayen, where only 18 meteorological stations are temporarily staying.
