A driver drove into a crowd in New Orleans, United States. At least 10 people are dead and 35 have been hospitalized, said the head of the local police. The FBI said in a statement that the perpetrator of the attack is dead and an ISIS flag was found in his vehicle, and therefore work is underway to “determine the perpetrator's potential connections and affiliation with terrorist organizations.” The White House said that US President Joe Biden is kept informed about the case and that help has been offered to the mayor of New Orleans.
According to witnesses quoted by CBS, the driver drove into the crowd at high speed. It happened around 3:15 a.m. local time (10 a.m. Polish time) on one of the main streets in New Orleans – Bourbon Street.
Later – as witnesses indicated – the driver got out of the car and started shooting. Police at the scene returned fire.
FBI: perpetrator of attack dead
The FBI said in a statement that the perpetrator was identified as 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen from Texas. “This morning, he drove a car into a crowd of people on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, killing many people and injuring dozens of others,” it said. It was also reported that there was a confrontation between law enforcement agencies and the perpetrator, who later died.
An ISIS flag was found in the perpetrator's vehicle. Work is currently underway to “determine the perpetrator's potential connections and affiliation with terrorist organizations.” The FBI also confirmed that a weapon and a potential explosive device were found in the perpetrator's vehicle. It added that “other potential explosives were also found in the French Quarter,” one of the main streets of which is Bourbon.
“There was a terrorist attack”
