One person was killed and at least nine others were injured in a shooting near Tennessee State University (TSU) in Nashville, police said.
According to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department (MNPD), a shooting occurred Saturday evening between participants of the annual celebration of the so-called Homecoming at the University of Tennessee.
– Ten people were confirmed injured in the shooting, one of whom died. Five people were transported by ambulance to local hospitals, and five others were transported by private vehicles, said Brooke Reese, MNPD public information officer.
The police published information on the X social media platform that a 24-year-old man had been killed and that the injured included: A 12-year-old girl and two 14-year-old girls who were taken to Vanderbilt Pediatrics Hospital. One firearm was found at the scene. According to preliminary findings, a handgun was used in the shooting.
“The crowd from the TSU homecoming parade began to thin out, but the parking lots were still full. Jefferson Street reopened about 20 minutes before the shooting,” local station WKRN reported.
The so-called Homecoming at TSU is described as a grand fall celebration. It brings together students, alumni, faculty and the local community to “celebrate school spirit, pride and tradition.” The celebrations include a variety of events, including a parade, an American football game and cultural events.
