Why daffodils?
On this day, volunteers and volunteers will give paper daffodils symbolizing memory, respect and hope. They are associated with the figure of Marek Edelman, the last leader of the Jewish combat organization, who received these flowers from an anonymous person on every anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. Every year, he also laid a bouquet of yellow flowers at the monument of the heroes of the ghetto at the monument of the heroes – most often they were daffodils.
The action organized by the Museum of the History of Polish Jews is aimed at disseminating this symbol and to transfer knowledge about the uprising.
Syrena in memory
Alarm sirens will be included at 12 in Warsaw. The continuous signal will last a minute. “At the same time, it is a test for the correct operation of the warning system in the capital. Residents should not take any steps in connection with the inclusion of sirens,” the City Hall informed.
Uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto
In 1940, the Germans fenced the wall of the center of Warsaw and crowded almost half a million Jews from the capital and the surrounding area. Trampled in the ghetto, they died of hunger, illness, slave work and died in executions. In the summer of 1942, during a great liquidation action, the Germans took nearly 300,000 Jews from the Ghetto to the Holocaust Center in Treblinka. The idea of armed resistance was born among the others.
When in the morning of April 19, 1943, German military troops entered the ghetto with the intention of its final liquidation, members of Jewish armed organizations under the command of Mordechaj Anielewicz stood up to the fight for human dignity. The first municipal uprising began in Europe occupied by the Germans.
