It has a reputation for being difficult to breed. A multi-clawed peacock chick hatched in the aviary of the Warsaw Zoo. These birds have unique plumage and are famous for their amazing dances.
“This inconspicuous baby is a peacock chick (Polyplectron malacense) that hatched last week,” the Warsaw Zoo's aviary wrote on social media. This bird belongs to the Galidae family. As noted in the post, the multi-clawed peacock is not easy to see in zoos. Apart from Warsaw, it lives only in the zoo in Prague and Chester.
They cause problems in breeding
This bird has a reputation for being difficult to breed. Why? There are few representatives of this species, and they lay only one egg in a clutch. Many-clawed peacocks are susceptible to diseases and mature late. The role of zoos in the survival of this species is therefore important.
Unfortunately, the situation of the peacock multiclaw in the wild is becoming more and more difficult.
“Its area of occurrence is shrinking every year, which of course has a direct impact on the condition and size of the wild population. We breed multi-clawed peacocks as part of a special EEP program and, as in the case of Congolese peacocks, each chick is extremely important and therefore gives hope that The fate of this unique species in zoos is not yet decided,” the Warsaw Zoo aviary emphasized in its entry.
They dance when they are trying to attract a female
According to the Warsaw Zoo, male multiclaws have unique plumage and are famous for their amazing dances when trying to court a female. They then perform complex poses aimed at impressing a much more modestly feathered female.
“Of the eight species of multi-clawed peacocks, the peacock, also called the Malayan peacock, is definitely one of the most interesting and beautiful,” it was written.
