There will be a new surface of the road and pavements. A bus loop will disappear from the central part, and the intersection with Jagiellońska will be rebuilt. Green will come. Hallera Square awaits such changes. Road workers announced a tender for the reconstruction project.
A spokesman for the Municipal Road Administration Jakub Dybalski pointed out that the surface of the square is in a very poor condition. – Safety should be improved at some pedestrian crossings. Parking cars limit visibility, and drivers develop too much speed. Residents paid attention to these problems during public consultations, which were the basis for developing ideas for the future appearance of the square – he added.
Haller's Square will change. A tender for the development of reconstruction project documentation has started. The designer selected in it will have 24 months to develop project documentation. The start of construction works will be possible at the earliest in 2027.
New surface, moved loop and more greenery
Road workers plan to replace the surface of pavements and roadways, plant more greenery, and also introduce calming solutions, thus increasing pedestrian safety.
They will also improve architectural availability so that the square is fully functional for all users. Cyclists who will gain a new bicycle path and stands will also be pleased.
Moved to Jagiellońska Street, to the area of the Starzyński roundabout, there will be a bus terminus, which today occupies a large part of the square. The intersection with Jagiellońska will be fully rebuilt. The direction of traffic on the square will also be reversed, which according to ZDM, the passage of the intersection with Jagiellońska Street.
The MZA building will be rebuilt, which will gain a new function as a service and entertainment pavilion.
As recommended by the conservator
In connection with the historic character of the square, the reconstruction must take place in accordance with the conservation recommendations. The shape of the fountain located in the center of the square will be preserved.
– The Mazowieckie Voivodship Conservator of Monuments only allowed reproductive changes in relation to its historical state. He also did not allow the road to narrow so as not to violate the original composition of the square – explained Dybalski.
The square was marked out in the first half of the 1950s. In the years 1957–1991 he was named after Julian Leński. It was the center of the establishment of the urban housing estate of Praga II designed by Jerzy Gieysztor and Jerzy Kumelowski. The estate was established in 1950–1966 and was intended for employees of the passenger car factory. It was called “Prague MDM”.
The square is located between Dąbrowszczaków and Jagiellońska streets. It is a vast, two -hectare assumption on the plan of an elongated rectangle. It comes to the streets of: Groszkowskiego, Skoczylas and Szymanowski. The traffic is allowed by two one -way streets on the southern and north of the square.
Socialist -style buildings
The square was enclosed in monumental blocks in the socialist realist style. They have most of the seven floors (including two commercial ones); The upper two, withdrawn floors in the corner buildings were preceded by colonnades (poles).
In the 1960s, a stela was set up in the north-eastern part of the square with the inscription: “A place sanctified by the blood of Soviet and Polish soldiers murdered by the Nazis in 1941–1943”.
The central part of the square is occupied by the square, which is located, among others Fountain, playground, papal oak and the intake of Oligocene water. In 2018, a graduation tower was set up there. There is also a bus terminus in the central part of the square.
The urban layout of the square was entered in the register of monuments.
