On Tuesday, April 1, a yellow Caro polonaise with the inscription “Follow Me” appeared on the airport at Okęcie. The same vehicles supported traffic at the airport in the 1990s.

Passengers rubbed their eyes in surprise, when among modern used cars at Chopin Airport they suddenly saw the yellow Caro polonaise. This popular car in the 1990s, on April 1, was a full member of the airport car team. It was even visible in the Flightradar24.com application under the name “Retrofm”.

– Yes, it's not a joke. Polonez actually traveled on Tuesday on the airport. This is its premiere, but we plan to use it in other interesting actions at the airport – said Chopin Airport spokeswoman Anna Dermont. She added that there was an idea to set this car at the airport as a curiosity.

Return to the 90s.

Dermont explained where the polonaise came from at the airport. One of the employees, an avid automotive fan, as well as aviation, restored the car by himself and at his own expense. The famous Polonez Caro was renewed 1: 1 and looks like in the 1990s “Follow Me” polonaises.

– We celebrate the 90th anniversary of the airport's activity, so we decided to do something cool on this specific day, which is April Fools. And we returned to the 90s, when such cars worked at the airport – Dermont pointed out.

The originators of this action were employees of the Airport Communication Office: Dariusz Kłosiński and Piotr Rudzki.

“Follow Me” cars deal with airports: setting aircraft on parking plates, an indication of safe directions of aircraft movement, protecting aircraft during taxiing near obstacles, running aircraft to the right parking stand, and also informing pilots about dangerous situations, such as fire.

Legend of Polish automotive industry

FSO POLONEZ is a passenger car produced by a passenger car factory in Warsaw from May 3, 1978 to April 22, 2002. It was created as the successor of the Polish Fiat 125p. The car inherited from the predecessor most technical solutions, including: drive transmission system, modified engines, braking system and suspension. The 5-door hatchback body was new.

In 1988, the polonaise utility version was introduced called Truck. In 1991, a thorough modernization was carried out, introducing the Caro version with a strongly refreshed body. Since 1996, the sedan version was available, a year later the last more serious modification of the polonaise was carried out, introducing Caro and Atu Plus models.

The station wagon version has also been available since 1999. The production was suspended on April 22, 2002, including the assembly sets, over 1 million copies of the model were produced in various versions. In 2021, about 33,000 these cars were registered in Poland.
