The capital city hall signed a contract for the renovation of a wooden building at 26 Kawęczyńska Street, which was an outbuilding of a brick tenement house. From the moment it was built, around 1890, it was continuously inhabited for the next 126 years.

During the signing of the contract, the deputy mayor of Warsaw, Aldona Machnowska-Góra, emphasized that this building is one of the last wooden monuments in Prague, adding that the renovation will be financed from government and municipal funds. – When it comes to the revitalization program of Prague, we are trying to implement it step by step, we want to change the area around a place like Burke's wooden house – she added.

The tender for the renovation of the wooden annex was announced by ZGN Praga-Północ. From the submitted offers, Tomasz Wójcik's Max-Bud company was selected and the contract was signed.

The building was secured a few years ago

Warsaw applied for money for conservation renovation at the beginning of 2023. It concerned subsidies from the Government Program for the Reconstruction of Monuments. In the second stage of the program, the city received PLN 3.5 million for the renovation of this unique Prague monument. At the end of August 2024, the Warsaw Council increased the amount for the renovation and a contractor could be selected in the next tender procedure.

The renovation, which will start soon, is intended not only to restore the good condition of the monument, but also to save and use as much of the original, historical substance of the building as possible. The square in front of the building will also be renovated. Completion of all works is planned for the end of 2026.

– The deteriorating state of vacancy was stopped in 2020, when the city carried out security works. The focus was on those elements that could have contributed to damage to the building, so the roof was sealed, chimneys that were at risk of collapse were dismantled, the building was stiffened with tie rods and the ceilings were stamped. The foundations were insulated against moisture. Antifungal spraying was also carried out and the area was fenced – said Anna Magdalena Łań, the main specialist from the office of the Warsaw Conservator of Monuments.

A rent from the end of the 19th century

The one-story tenement house was built around 1890 by Edmund Burke. After World War II, it became a municipal house. The last tenant moved out in 2016. A year earlier, the house was protected and entered into the register of monuments.
