Wileńska Street may go to the register of monuments. Proceedings were initiated regarding the conservation protection of its historical urban layout on a nearly 500-meter section. Its buildings almost entirely survived World War II.
“The Mazowieckie Voivodship Conservator of Monuments initiated administrative proceedings regarding the entry in the register of immovable monuments of the historical urban layout of Wileńska Street” – informs the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments in the Facebook post. As explained, the procedure applies to the section of the street from Targowa to Konopacka. It is about 500 meters long.
The office reminds that Wileńska Street was founded around 1860 in connection with the establishment of New Prague. Its name refers to Vilnius, to which trains from built in 1865 at St. Petersburg Street departed. “Originally she crossed Szwedzka Street and ended blindly at the Warsaw Stal Factory. In 1908 Electric Trams went through Wileńska Street” – we read in the entry.
During World War II, only two buildings at Vilnius were destroyed. The remaining buildings of the street survived.
Protection of historic streets
Conservation protection will mean that all street repairs, building facades or modifications in the sphere of greenery will have to take place with the consent of the monument conservator. – Protection of the urban layout is primarily to preserve space in an unchanged state – explains Anna Śmigielska, spokeswoman for the Provincial Office for the Protection of Monuments.
In this case, the entry in the register of monuments will protect the facades of buildings along the street, but it is not tantamount to taking the interior of each property with conservation protection. However, it is still possible to make individual entries in the register of monuments of buildings located in the protected area. Then the entry is determined by the scope of protection with an indication of whether it applies to the entire property or its selected elements.
