The number of victims of the catastrophic flood that visited the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Official data talk about at least 33 killed, three more than reported on Sunday. The disaster was caused by many hours of heavy rain, which – according to forecasts – may also occur in other regions of the country.
The situation in the flooded capital of the democratic capital of the Congo Republic – Kinshasa – and in neighboring municipalities is still very difficult. Foreign media inform about desperate residents who, on makeshift boats, try to get out of flooded areas. As the local authorities passed, the cataclysm affected about half of the 17-million city. The suburbs inhabited by the poorest suffered the most.
– The water reaches 1.5 meters. We managed to save, but the rest is trapped at home – one of the residents said.
The crisis is deepening
Foreign media indicate that in the capital of Dr. Congo there is a shortage of drinking water after the flood flooded the water treatment pumps. There is also a risk of landslides in the city. The most busy street of the city, connecting the center with an international airport, is impassable, as is the part of the highway between the capital and the main port of the country, Matadi. The recordings published on the network show the destruction made by water.
The downpours hit Kinszasa and the neighboring Central Central Province On the night of Friday to Saturday. For many hours of rainfall caused an increase in the water level in rivers and water reservoirs. On Saturday, several watercourses appeared from the banks, flooding the peripheral districts of the capital of DRK. According to forecasts, in the coming days heavy rainfall may also affect the northern and north-east areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.
