Premiere of the western “Rust” by Alec Baldwin at the EnergaCamerimage festival
According to the organizer's announcement, during the conversation the creators will talk about “events related to production” and “how they tried to continue Halyna's work in accordance with her artistic vision of shooting for the film.” “Halyna's story will serve as a starting point for a conversation about the role of women in cinematography and their contribution to the art of film. The participation of other “Rust” actors in the event is also uncertain.
EnergaCamerimage is an event dedicated to cinematographers. Already at the initial stage of production of “Rust”, Hutchins allegedly convinced director Joel Souza that their joint work should be presented during the festival in Poland. – Our event was important to her, and she felt at home among cinematographers from all over the world who have been gathering at Camerimage for over 30 years – says the festival director, Marek Å»ydowicz.
During this year's edition of the competition, the jury will be headed by Cate Blanchett. In previous years, the festival was attended by, among others: Willem Dafoe, Adam Driver, Peter Dinklage, Richard Gere, Jessica Lange, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Denis Villeneuve and Andrzej Wajda.
Tragedy on the set of “Rust”
As the description of the film on the festival's website indicates, the plot of “Rust” takes place in Wyoming in the 1880s. It tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who has to take care of his younger brother after the death of his parents. After being sentenced to hang for accidentally killing a local rancher, the main character decides to escape with his long-lost grandfather.
In October 2021, a tragedy occurred on the set of a western – the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The film's director, Joel Souza, was also injured. Alec Baldwin was holding the gun. The revolver used by the actor should be free of live bullets during this time. The person responsible for the gun was Hannah Gutierrez-Reed. The armorer was not on set at the time of the accident.
In April Gutierrez-Reed was sentenced to 18 months in prison. Her defense lawyers tried unsuccessfully to appeal the verdict. Alec Baldwin was also charged with unintentional manslaughter in connection with the case. In July the court rejected this accusation due to the prosecutor's office concealing some evidence.
