Marshal of the Sejm Szymon HoĊownia said that last week a request was submitted to waive the immunity of the president of the Institute of National Remembrance, PiS candidate for president, Karol Nawrocki, in connection with the accusation by the association of uniformed pensioners. “We perceive this request as an attempt to intimidate the President of the independent and apolitical institution of the Polish state,” the Institute of National Remembrance said in a statement on Thursday.
Szymon HoĊownia at Wednesday's briefing, he said that on Thursday, the Sejm Committee on Rules, Deputies' Affairs and Immunities will meet to consider further immunity cases.
According to HoĊownia, “there are many applications for private and civil prosecutions, two of which were received last week.”
One of them – as HoĊownia said – was filed against the head of the Institute of National Remembrance and at the same time PiS presidential candidate Karol Nawrocki by associations of uniformed pensioners in connection with his statement about them – in their opinion, offensive. Statement of the Institute of National Remembrance
In response to HoĊownia's announcement, on Thursday the Institute of National Remembrance issued a statement expressing its position.
“We regret to receive the information about the submission to the Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland of a request to waive the immunity of Dr. Karol Nawrocki, president of the Institute of National Remembrance – Commission for the Prosecution of Crimes against the Polish Nation, in a matter regarding a public statement relating to the process of restoring pension privileges to former officers of the totalitarian security apparatus of the Polish People's Republic. “- said in the statement.
“We perceive this request as an attempt to intimidate the President of an independent and apolitical institution of the Polish state – the Institute of National Remembrance, whose statutory duties include prosecuting crimes committed by officers of the communist security apparatus. Our duty is also to demand compensation for the victims of communist repression,” it added.
Institute of National Remembrance he stated that “restoring pension privileges to former officers of the communist security apparatus is contrary to the elementary principles of justice and responsibility. It is a slap in the face to the victims of communist repression and also to their loved ones.”
