The space sector in Poland is not an old industry, as in the world. Now he is doing very well – said in an interview with TVN24 BIS Paweł Wojtkiewicz, president of the Union of Employers of the Space Sector, director at GMV Innovating Solutions. He also emphasized that “without safe satellite communication, modern countries cannot now function.”

Wojtkiewicz during a conversation during the European Economic Congress in Katowice said that the fact that our companies “implement contracts for the European Space Agency are of great importance for the development of the Polish space sector, develop their products and services, which are now offered by these companies on the commercial market.”

Space sector in Poland

– Of course, we have companies in Poland that deal with the production of satellites, we have companies in Poland that deal with providing, processing satellite data for public administration or for the private sector. Finally, we also have companies that produce specialized software or specialized equipment for many missions carried out in Europe, but not only, also through United Statesand other countries – said the president of the Union.

He added that “the space industry in Poland has developed very well for the last 10 years”.

Wojtkiewicz pointed out that this sector “of course is an incubator of modern technologies”, because where if not in it “the most modern technologies are to develop?”

– There we develop those technologies that allow us to land on the moon, land on the asteroid, land on a comet. And later based on these technologies, where we really reach to the limit of humanity, we build those technologies that we use on Earth, also in the area of defense and security – he emphasized.

Place of Poland in the race

When asked about what ambitions we should have as Poland in the space sector and how to select ourselves, position in this space race global powers, Wojtkiewicz replied that “fortunately, that we are in the European Union.”

European Union For many, many years, he has been developing his own space programs quite intensively with very large budgets. We are talking here about the Copernicus program, i.e. the Earth Observation Program. We are talking about the Galileo program, i.e. the European satellite navigation system. We are also talking about satellite communication and we are talking here about the project or Govsatcom, as well as the future Iris² program. As for Poland, we should have ambitions to do our country – said the expert.

A representative of the space industry pointed out that “we are not a small country in the European Union, and we are no longer a small country in the European Space Agency, so we should put ambitious goals very much. Of course, a good direction was that we have a Camila program, we also have a microGlob program.”

– These are programs in which we develop constellations of observation satellites for the needs of our country. The microglob program is a military program, the Camila program is a civil program, let's say “dual use”, but more civil. Recently, Poland has signed a contract for the purchase of two observation satellites just for the army. This took place, if I remember correctly, two years ago, so these systems are developed. What next? Satellite communication. We should go in this direction – he emphasized.

He also added: – Without safe satellite connectivity, in principle, modern countries cannot function now.
