The State Fire Service currently has over 1,300 unfilled positions, most of them in the Mazowieckie province – Karol Kierzkowski, press spokesman for the Chief Commander of the State Fire Service, told the business editorial office of tvn24.pl. Who can become a firefighter and how much do they earn in this position?

The State Fire Service currently has 1,375 vacancies (as of August 31, 2019), with a total employment of 30,171 firefighters. As Karol Kierzkowski, the spokesman for the State Fire Service, told us, the largest number of unfilled positions is located in the following voivodeships: Masovian (189), Greater Poland (155) and Silesian (107).

“In terms of percentage of full-time positions, the highest number of vacancies is in the State Fire Service HQ (11.34%), in the Lubuskie Province (9.3%) and in the Fire Service Academy in Warsaw (6.31%),” the spokesman said in a comment sent to the business editorial office of tvn24.pl.

Who can become a firefighter?

The State Fire Service may be served by persons who:

  • have Polish citizenship,
  • are not convicted of a crime or fiscal offence,
  • enjoy full public rights,
  • have at least secondary or secondary vocational education,
  • are physically and mentally fit to serve.

The assessment of candidates' mental and physical abilities is carried out by designated medical boards. This means that anyone interested in serving must pass fitness and psychological tests.

After obtaining a positive decision, the candidate is appointed as a firefighter in preparatory service for a period of 3 years. The appointment may occur after completing military service or transfer to the reserve. It is worth remembering that civilian employees are also employed in the structures of the State Fire Service.

How much do beginner firefighters earn?

According to information provided by Karol Kierzkowski, the spokesman for the National Police Headquarters the average monthly gross salary of a beginner firefighter (trainee position) as of June 30 this year amounted to PLN 6,267.10. A firefighter's remuneration consists of basic remuneration and remuneration supplements.

“In addition, a firefighter may receive the following allowances to their remuneration: a rank allowance, a service allowance, a motivational allowance, allowances justified by specific qualifications, conditions or place of service (a allowance for service in conditions harmful to health or onerous, a capital allowance, an allowance introducing them to service), a functional allowance for serving in a managerial or independent position,” the spokesman explained.
