French director Yves Boisset, creator of engaged films, including “Ras” about the war in Algeria and gangster films (“in Matnia”), died at the age of 86, AFP said on Monday, citing the family of the deceased.
Boisset was a creator about leftist views. He often was inspired by real events, and treated his films as a way of fighting, “looking for truth” and unmasking – as he said – “stupidity, whose specific variety is racism.” The daily “Le Figaro” emphasized, in the 1970s, the name of Boisset was synonymous with political cinema. As “Le Monde” writes, the director “rightly boasted that he was the most censored French filmmaker of the 5th Republic.”
Yves Boisset – Biography
Yves Boisset was born on March 14, 1939 in Paris, he served in Algeria, then he was a journalist of the monthly “Cinema”, and then – the director's assistant at such artists as Jean -Pierre Melville and Vittorio de Sica.
He made his first film in 1968 (“Coplan saves the skin”). Later he made up to 10 films in 10 years. The topics he dealt with often attracted censorship problems on his head. These are “Zamach” (1972), in which Jean-Louis Trintignant appeared in the main role. In 1973 he made the film “Ras” and was then one of the first filmmakers who dealt with the topic of the Algerian war. The torture scenes were under censorship.
The most famous film by Boisset was “Dupont Lajoie” (1975) about hostility in society towards immigrants. Photos and later projections in theaters were accompanied by threats from the extreme right. However, the film was popular. At the Berlinale Film Festival in 1975 he won the Silver Bear Award – a special jury award.
Boisset's other well -known films became: “Liliowa Taxi” (1977) and “In Matni” with Lee Marvin (1984). The director made the last two -territorial film in 1990 and devoted himself to television realizations (including “Dreyfus Case”, 1997). In 2011 he published the autobiography of “La Vie Est Un Choix” (“Life is a choice”).
