The condition of a 3.5-year-old girl who was admitted to hospital several days ago due to extreme hunger is improving. She is getting stronger and weighs 10 kilograms – the spokeswoman of the University Hospital in Zielona Góra announced on Monday. The baby was to be fed only with grapes and mother's milk. When the girl was hospitalized in mid-December, she weighed 8 kilograms. The prosecutor's office is investigating and the parents are in custody.
Sylwia Malcher-Nowak, spokeswoman for the University Hospital in Zielona Góra, said on Monday that the 3.5-year-old girl is already being fed orally. – The girl's condition is improving. She is getting stronger and weighs 10 kg, she said.
The parents brought the girl to the hospital when she stopped eating and contact with her was difficult. Doctors noticed that the child was extremely hungry. The girl weighed 8 kilograms and should have weighed about 18. A decision was made to immediately admit the child to the intensive care unit of the University Hospital in Zielona Góra.

The prosecutor's office is investigating this case. – We will verify how the child was cared for and fed – said prosecutor Ewa Antonowicz, spokeswoman for the Zielona Góra district prosecutor's office.
Information about the child's medical care will also be checked. – The prosecutor will verify the parents' defense line – said Antonowicz.

The three-year-old's parents were temporarily arrested. They were accused of creating a truly life-threatening disease in the form of multi-organ failure caused by improper nutrition of the child. They face from 3 to 20 years in prison. Rafał B. and Magdalena J. pleaded not guilty to the charges against them. They explained that the child had been listless for some time and did not want to eat. They said the girl slept during the day, not at night. She was supposed to eat at night.
According to the preliminary opinion of a forensic expert, the child was extremely malnourished and had disturbances in physical and intellectual development.
– Her limbs were cold and her legs were swollen – Antonowicz said and added that this condition was a threat to the child's life and constituted “serious damage to health”.
According to the expert, the girl's condition was caused by extreme malnutrition.
