Police trainees stopped a drunk driver. The man was driving “in a snake-like manner” on national road number 22 in Wielkopolska, then stopped at a gas station to buy more alcohol. He didn't go any further. The trainees called a patrol and made sure that the 72-year-old didn't escape.
A policeman from Września and a policewoman from Gniezno were returning from a course at the Police School in Słupsk on Friday afternoon. They came across a driver whose driving style indicated that he may be under the influence of alcohol or another substance.
– Officers noticed a Ford driving along a national road, which “snaked” into a gas station. A man who had been sitting behind the wheel of the passenger car a moment earlier entered the store and wanted to buy alcohol. During a conversation with the driver, the Słupsk trainees detected a strong smell of alcohol, confirming their belief that he was most likely drunk – said Asp. Damian Pachuc, spokesman for the Złotów police.
The police immediately called the emergency number. A uniformed patrol arrived at the scene. Until it arrived, the trainees made sure that the 72-year-old did not try to leave.
– It turned out that a resident of the Okonek commune had over 1 per mille of alcohol in his system. He explained to the police that he had come to the gas station to buy more alcohol. The irresponsible driver will now answer in court – explains Pachuc.
He won't escape punishment
The 72-year-old has already lost his driving license. He faces a hefty fine, a driving ban and up to 5 years in prison.
The spokesman for the Złotów police praised the attitude of the young police officers. – They are at the beginning of their professional career. Their perceptiveness and commitment allowed them to eliminate from traffic a driver who posed a threat to other road users – added Pachuc.
