Karol Świderski spoke after the Poland – Portugal match
– Well, I think it was because the quality of the Portuguese team was visible on the pitch. It was definitely a very difficult match. It's a pity about the first half. We started nicely in the first 7-10 minutes. We kept the ball, the opponents fouled us in our own half, we won corner kicks, so we posed a threat, but then we retreated a little too deep. We can press low, but we should go higher for every pass that is played backwards. I think this was missing in the first half – said Karol Świderski in a post-match interview in front of the cameras TVP Sport.
– In the second half it looked completely different. I think the second half was better. We went higher. Several times Portugal played a long pass and we regained the ball. It's a pity that we didn't play so bravely in the first half, only after the goals we conceded – added the Polish striker.
Later in his statement, Świderski admitted that he felt dissatisfied with the lack of a goal. – In the first half I tried to put my head somewhere and the ball bounced. Franek crossed the ball, it missed, so the ball was looking for me, it's a pity that in one of these situations it didn't bounce a little better. If it had bounced a little better, I could have taken it and finished with a second contact. It's definitely a shame about these situations, said the 27-year-old.
The National Stadium said goodbye to Szczęsny and Krychowiak
The match against Portugal was preceded by honoring two players who have been the strength of the Polish national team for years. We are talking about Grzegorz Krychowiak and Wojciech Szczęsny. Before the anthems were played, both players appeared on the pitch, together with the president of the Polish Football Association – Cezary Kulesza and the secretary Łukasz Wachowski. He gave both players national team shirts with numbers corresponding to the number of their appearances in the national team. In the case of Krychowiak it was number 100, and Szczęsny – 84.
After three rounds, the White and Reds are third in the Group 1 table in League A with three points. The Portuguese, in turn, are in first place and have nine points. The next match the Polish national team will play on Tuesday, October 15, at home against Croatia. First whistle at 20:45.
