Whether you’re an avid DIYer or just want to improve a few things around the house knowing a few DIY hacks will help make you and your family’s life that little bit easier. For the most part, the hacks are very easy to implement and they can be up and running quickly.
So without further ado, let’s take a deep dive into home hacks.
1 Stop the Garage Flood
Many garages are prone to some kind of flooding, often caused by melting snow from tyres or spring floods which you may feel have become routine. One way to stop the flooding is to spray expanding foam on the floor where you normally get the floods. At the very least it contains the water and you can drive or walk over it. You’ll probably notice that the foam will absorb the flood water leaving your things protected. When you’re ready just scrape it off.
2 Keep Glue Handy
There are several key tools you should keep to hand. Hammers, screwdrivers, drill, tape and glue. A good tube of super glue can handle a variety of repairs and different types of glue are designed to work in different environments. It is truly amazing when you consider it can handle a range of
temperature tolerances and some glues are designed to be used outside in wet environments.
Bottomline, keep a tube handy.
3 Eat Healthily
Although more of a lifestyle choice than a home hack there can be no doubt that if you eat healthy you‘ll live a longer happier life. To save on expenditure and cut down on food waste, make shopping lists and stick to them. This will not only help you budget but also you’ll have more energy to do among other things, implement more DIY and home improvement hacks.
4 Remove those Pesky Highlighter Stains
If you’ve ever opened a book and seen highlighted text it can be a little off putting. Instead of living with it, use lemon juice to remove it. Cut a lemon in half and using a swab, run it over the highlighted text and the colour will drain leaving your book untouched.
5 Reuse as Much as You Can
Reusing items is a great life hack. It saves you money and it keeps waste and other things out of the landfill. Here are three things you can do right now:
- Use an aluminium bottle or flask instead of disposable water bottles.
- Cloth bags instead of carrier bags.
- Start composting.
6 Grow Food
Growing food in the UK is not as daunting as you might think. If you can’t grow food in your garden or perhaps you don’t want to disturb it, approach your local council to get an allotment. There are plenty of YouTube videos to show you how to grow food effectively, and plenty of good literature like John Seymour’s Self Sufficiency.
Given the shenanigans that are going on with the food chain at the moment, growing your own food is a must.
7 Maximise Wardrobe Space
It is fair to say that most would like more wardrobe space. There are a few products that you can buy to create space or you can simply hang a chain in the wardrobe allowing you to store around 6 garments in the space of one.
8 Keep Your Tools Safe When Working at Height
If you’re working on a roof it is a good idea to wrap them in a rubber band. This stops the tool that you need to slide off the roof. It is a simple hack and one that can save you a world of pain.
9 Banish Drain Odour Forever
If you have a problem with drain odour there is a simple solution. Pour about 2 gallons (10 litres) of water into the drain followed by a tablespoon of oil. The oil seals on the surface of the water trapping the smell, holding it at bay.
10 Combine Cleaning Tasks to Save Time
If you’re in the cleaning zone, try and combine jobs to save time. For example, when you’re cleaning windows, clean your binds. If you’re cleaning the floor or hoovering try and clean the skirting boards. A lot of time can be saved with a little thought.
11 Get More Out of Your Dishwasher
Most just clean their dishes and cutlery but you can use them to clean jars, ceramics, and anything that is made of glass. Not only can you clean items of this nature in the dishwasher but they normally come out better and it saves a lot of time.
12 Use a Leaf Blower to Clean the Garage
Often people tend to use a broom to clear out the dust and other debris from the garage. This is fine, but if you want to save time you should use a leaf blower to blow the dust out of your garage. Secure away anything that can blow away and use a leaf blower to blow out the debris. You can use it on surfaces and you can get around any cupboards or things that may be in there. Save a lot of time.
Hope you find a use for these hacks.
