Spain – Canary Islands. Exceptional condition due to heavy rains

The authorities of the Spanish Canary Islands announced on Saturday a state of emergency due to heavy rainfall, which created a flood threat to Lanzarote, one of the islands of the archipelago. In the media there were recordings of flooded streets, immobilized vehicles and gorges filled with rushing water.

The most serious situation was recorded in the central and eastern part of the Lanzarote Island, in the municipalities of Arrecife, Teguise and San Bartolome. In several regions, the weather caused breaks in power supply, and firefighters intervened over 300 times.

Difficult situation on Lanzarote

Within two hours in several towns, over 70 liters of water per square meter fell. “I've never seen anything like that,” a resident of Costa Teguise, quoted by the Canarias7 portal.

Local security services issued recommendations regarding behavior in an emergency and called to avoid unnecessary travels.
