Donald Trump, in his first speech after the assassination attempt on his life, spoke about the course of the attack. “You'll never hear this from me again because it hurts too much,” he said. He added that “the bullets were half an inch away from taking his life.” He also paid tribute to his supporter who died during the rally.
Donald Trump He spoke at the Republican convention in Milwaukee. It was his first appearance since the attack, in which he was wounded. He spoke with his ear bandaged. “As you already know, the bomber's bullets were a half-inch away from taking my life. They're asking what happened, and that's why I'm going to tell you exactly what happened. You'll never hear me say this again because it's too painful to talk about,” Trump said at the beginning of his speech.
He said the shots were fired when he turned to the right to see a diagram on a large screen about illegal migration. “I wanted to turn around even more, but luckily I didn't,” he said.
– I heard a loud, whistling sound and felt something hit me very, very hard in my right ear. I said to myself: Wow, what was that? It could only be a bullet. I reached for my ear with my right hand, it was covered in blood – he recalled.
As the former president said, “there was blood absolutely everywhere”. – I knew right away that this was a very serious situation. A moment later I fell to the ground, bullets were still flying. Very brave Secret Service agents jumped on the scene and did a great job. They took a huge risk, they jumped on me to protect me. Blood was flowing everywhere, but in a way I felt very safe because I had God on my side – he said.
Trump: I am standing here by the grace of God
– If I hadn't turned my head, at that last moment the assassin's bullet would have hit its intended target perfectly. And today I wouldn't be with you, we wouldn't be standing here together – he said.
“I shouldn't be here with you tonight. I shouldn't be here. I'll tell you, I'm standing here before you only by the grace of God Almighty,” Trump said.
Trump paid tribute to the man killed in the attack
Donald Trump also paid tribute to his supporter Corey Comperatore, who was killed by a gunman, by hugging a mannequin dressed in his firefighter's uniform and kissing his helmet. “There is no greater love than this, than to lay down one's life for one's friends,” Trump said.
