The European Commission should review next year the rules that will ban the sale of new combustion cars from 2035, Italian Industry Minister Adolfo Urso said, according to Reuters.
Speaking at a business forum in Cernobbio, Urso said the review of the regulations, scheduled for 2026, should take place earlier, at the beginning of next year. “I think this should be the first issue that the new European Commissionbecause businesses and workers need clarity, Urso said.
Moving away from combustion engines
EU rules require new cars sold after 2035 to have zero carbon dioxide emissions, preventing new vehicles powered by fossil fuels from being sold. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government believes the European Commission should give member states more freedom to choose the technology they prefer to meet agreed decarbonisation targets and supports a more gradual move away from combustion engines. “The ban on new cars with combustion engines from 2035 is absurd and must be changed,” Italian Energy Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin told the same conference.
