Weinstein Charges and Verdicts

Weinstein, 72, is scheduled to appear in court this week in preparation for his retrial to overturn one of the judgments.

The co-founder of Miramax Films, an American film production and distribution studio, was sentenced to 23 years in prison in 2020 for forcing a sex act on his assistant Mimi Haleyi in 2006 and raping then-aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013. In 2023 A Los Angeles court sentenced Weinstein to 16 years in prison for the 2013 rape of a former model and actress, referred to in court as Jane Doe 1 (this is the name given to the people appearing anonymously in the proceedings).

It all started with a 2017 interview that actress Annabella Sciorra gave to the New Yorker magazine. In it, she claimed that Weinstein had raped her more than 20 years earlier in her New York apartment. After the interview was published, dozens of women, including several famous actresses, accused the producer of sexual harassment. The publicity surrounding the Weinstein case led to a 2017 intensification of the #MeToo movementdirected against sexual abuse in the workplace by powerful men.
