The White House said U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris called former Republican President Donald Trump. Harris told Trump in a brief conversation that she was “grateful” he was safe after the attempted attack on Sunday.

“Vice President Harris called former President Trump this afternoon to speak directly with him and express gratitude that he is safe. It was a cordial and brief conversation,” a White House official told reporters.

Harris herself, when asked about this during an interview with representatives of the Philadelphia Association of African American Journalists, said that she called to check whether Trump was doing well.

“I told him what I have said publicly: that there is no place for political violence in our country. I am running in this election for many reasons, including to fight for democracy, and in a democracy there is no place for political violence,” she said.

The Democratic candidate said she feels safe under Secret Service protection, but added that many people at risk of violence do not have such protection, including Haitian immigrants in Ohio.

More than 30 evacuations, including of schools, have been carried out there in recent days amid threats linked to rumors spread by Trump and vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance that migrants are kidnapping and eating pets.

Biden spoke to Trump

The conversation between the rivals in the upcoming presidential election came a day after President Biden called Trump, who was also said to have a “cordial” conversation with him. Trump later said during a live discussion on X that Biden was “very nice and called to make sure everything was OK.”

The former president also said he needs more people to protect his rallies.

“We have 50, 60,000 people coming to events. Other people don't have that. But Biden couldn't have been nicer,” Trump said.
