Nobel Prize in Literature 2024. Laureate announced

The decision was announced by the Swedish Academy on Thursday. The winner of this year's Nobel Prize in Literature is Han Kang from South Korea.

She was the bookmakers' favorite to win this award 71-year-old Chinese writer Can Xue, followed by 85-year-old Australian writer Gerald Murnane. However, bookmakers' clear favorites are rarely actually awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, although award-winning authors often appear further down their lists. The only Polish name that appeared in this year's rankings was Ryszard Krynicki.

The Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded since 1901. The Swedish Academy that awards it consists of 18 members, including Swedish writers, poets, philologists and historians. The Nobel Committee, this year consisting of six people, is working to select the winner. The nominations are secret and are revealed only 50 years after the award was granted.

So far, the Swedish Academy has appreciated five Polish-language artists: Henryk Sienkiewicz (1905), Władysław Reymont (1924), Czesław Miłosz (1980), Wisława Szymborska (1996) and Olga Tokarczuk (for 2018, awarded in 2019).

The Nobel Prize winners in medicine or physiology were announced on Monday – to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. On Tuesday, we met this year's Nobel Prize winners in physics – they are John J. Hopfield and Geoffrey E. Hinton for “fundamental discoveries enabling machine learning using artificial neural networks.” The winners of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry were announced on Wednesday. The award was shared equally between David Baker and Demis Hassabis and John M. Jumper for their research on the design and prediction of the three-dimensional structure of proteins.

On Friday, the Nobel Peace Prize will be awarded in the capital NorwayOslo, and will be announced by the five-member Norwegian Nobel Committee. And on Monday, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will announce the winner of the Nobel Prize in economics, a field not mentioned in Alfred Nobel's will. This award is formally called the Bank Award Sweden them. Alfred Nobel and is the only one financed by the Swedish Central Bank.
