Downpours associated with the remnants of Super Typhoon Kong-rey hit southwestern Japan on Saturday. In places, over 370 liters of water per square meter fell in one day and flooding occurred. Nearly 190,000 people have been ordered to evacuate in the city of Matsuyama.

November records were broken
According to The Japan Times, heavy rain hit the Kyushu, Chuugoku and Shikoku regions. The heaviest rainfall was recorded in Nagasaki Prefecture, where 378 liters of water per square meter fell in 24 hours. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) said that as of 5 p.m. local time, 222 observation points had recorded the highest-ever daily rainfall totals in November.
Downpours caused major disruptions in the city of Matsuyama. Witness footage showed vehicles and pedestrians moving through flooded streets and shopping malls. The highest level evacuation order was announced in 10 districts of the city – over 189,000 people were ordered to leave their homes.
The storm system gradually moved east on Saturday. The JMA urged caution – further flooding and landslides were possible in affected regions, and strong winds were also a danger.
