Intel was to build a large factory in Poland that would employ thousands of people. The Ministry of Digitization has even announced a “green light for notification of state aid” from the European Commission. Ultimately, however, construction was suspended for two years. However, there was money left in the budget that the Polish government was supposed to transfer to Intel as part of public aid.
Intel won't build the factory, but the government had the money to do so. What will he spend it on?
“Republic” writes that we are talking about approximately PLN 3 billion this year and USD 1.84 billion in the years 2024-2026. What about this money? – The funds to finance public aid for Intel (editor's note this year) were intended to come from the issue of Treasury securities. Due to the suspension of investments by Intel, the Minister of Digitization did not apply for their issuance – explained Mateusz Pawłowicz from the communications office of the Ministry of Digitization in an interview with “Rzeczpospolita”.
Instead of a factory, an investment in the arms industry? There is an idea
The Ministry of Development wants to take them over and invest in the arms industry – “Rzeczpospolita” learned unofficially. The talks on this subject were to be conducted by Deputy Minister Jacek Tomczak (recently dismissed) and the head of the Chancellery of the Prime Minister, Jan Grabiec. There is no final decision on the matter yet, but the idea is being seriously considered. It is also unclear what exactly the funds would be spent on and how much.
Intel was also officially asked what to do with the plot of land that was being prepared for the investment. Until it is certain that Intel will not build a factory in Poland, “moving” money will be problematic. The Ministry of Digitization also assured that it is open to supporting other semiconductor investments in Poland in the coming months.
