NATO countries condemned the deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea. In a joint statement, they called it a “dangerous expansion” of the invasion against Ukraine. “We call on all countries not to provide any assistance to Russian aggression and condemn all those who facilitate and thus prolong Russia's illegal war against Ukraine,” the signatories said.

In a statement published on Friday NATO countries recalled that, in addition to the significant support already provided to Russia's military operations in the form of the transfer of millions of rounds of ammunition and ballistic missiles to Moscow, the North Korean authorities also sent Russia thousands of trained soldiers. “This constitutes a dangerous expansion of Russia's unprovoked and illegal war against Ukraine,” the statement said.

Allies stressed that deepening military cooperation between Russia and North Korea has a profound impact on Euro-Atlantic security, as well as in the Indo-Pacific. They stressed that increasing military cooperation between the two countries violates many Security Council resolutions UNwhich is particularly egregious given that Russia has the status of a permanent member of the Council.

“We call on Russia to once again comply with the above-mentioned resolutions and respect its international obligations,” the document appealed.

Russia's statement 'unacceptable'

NATO countries also found unacceptable Russia's statement of September 26 this year, in which the authorities of the Russian Federation stated that the denuclearization of North Korea was “out of discussion.”

“This statement is unacceptable because it undermines the global non-proliferation regime (of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons), is in direct contradiction to the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and further exacerbates tensions in the region,” the Alliance countries said, warning that it was one of the broader Russia's efforts to undermine the global nuclear weapons treaty and lift UN sanctions.

“We call on all countries not to provide any assistance to Russian aggression and condemn all those who facilitate and thus prolong Russia's illegal war against Ukraine,” the signatories said, assuring that NATO will continue to cooperate with its partners, in particular in the Indo-Pacific region , to promote peace and stability and prevent “Russia and those who facilitate its hostilities” from undermining regional and global stability.

Strengthening deterrence and defense capabilities

The document confirmed that Allies will continue to strengthen NATO's deterrence and defense capabilities against all threats and challenges “in all domains and in many strategic directions throughout the Euro-Atlantic area.”

It was also assured that NATO would support Ukraine as long as “until this one wins”. NATO countries declared that they would increase the necessary political, military, financial, economic and humanitarian assistance for “a country exercising its right to self-defense.” “Allies are determined to support Ukraine in building forces capable of defeating Russian aggression, consistent with the promise of long-term security assistance to Ukraine,” the document said.

Apart from NATO countries, other countries also signed the declaration Australia, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea and Ukraine.
