The Civic Platform has not yet announced who its candidate will be in the presidential elections. In the opinion of sociologist Professor Jarosław Flis, Donald Tusk's party “has a serious problem” in this matter. According to him, it is more likely to field Rafał Trzaskowski, taking into account the things the PiS candidate could use to attack Radosław Sikorski.
On Saturday at The national board of the Civic Platform will meet at the party headquarters in Warsaw at 9. The topic of the meeting will be next year's presidential elections. After the meeting, the PO authorities plan to issue a statement. The Civic Coalition is to present its presidential candidate on December 7 in Silesia. The two most serious candidates are the mayor of Warsaw Rafał Trzaskowski and the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Radosław Sikorski.
Who is the PO candidate?
Can it influence the choice of the PO candidate for president? Donald Trump's victory in the presidential elections in USA? Professor Jarosław Flis believes that there is a “complicated system of dependencies” in which both the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Radosław Sikorski, and the president of the capital, Rafał Trzaskowski, have many strong advantages and serious weaknesses.
– The Platform certainly has a serious problem – he said.
In his opinion, Trzaskowski is still the more likely candidate. He assessed that Sikorski's controversial statements and unflattering words of his wife Anne Applebaum about Donald Trumpor the fact that his son is a soldier in the American army, which could potentially be an attack on the rival candidate from PiS.
– It's about what you can attack a candidate for and how he can alienate people – said prof. Floss.
The political scientist noted that no one has thoroughly examined the extent to which this type of thing can be used, because, as many examples have shown, even the best topic can be overheated, as PiS did, scaring Donald Tusk before last year's parliamentary elections. – Tusk is not a star of social trust, but turning him into a whipping boy turned out to be a bad tactic and he benefited from it Szymon Hołownia – he said.
“One big misunderstanding”
According to prof. Flis, “the presidential elections in Poland are one big misunderstanding”, in which a person is elected who “behaves like a passenger in a moving car, who has no ability to drive and can only apply the handbrake.”
– In the national, most brutal, confrontational method that humanity has invented, in the case of electing one person, we choose someone who has zero competences – he said.
