Timothy West, described by the BBC as “one of the greatest and most versatile British actors,” has died. The artist, known for his stage work, films and TV series, was 90 years old.
Timothy West's death was announced in a statement by his children, Juliet, Samuel and Joseph. “After a long and extraordinary life on and off the stage, our beloved father, Timothy West, died peacefully in his sleep last night,” they said on Wednesday.
As added in the statement, the actor was in hospital in the last days of his life, surrounded by family and friends. In addition to his children, he is survived by his wife, Prunella Scales, to whom he was married for 61 years, and seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. “We will all miss him terribly,” it was emphasized.

Timothy West was born in 1934 in Bradford. He was a very popular stage actor who was described by the BBC as “one of Britain's greatest and most versatile actors”. He played main roles, including: in plays such as “Uncle Vanya”, “Death of a Salesman”, “Twilight of the Long Day” and “Macbeth”.
He also appeared on television from the 1960s. He appeared, among others, in British soap operas such as “Coronation Street” and “EastEnders” or the series “Not Going Out”. He played the role of Winston Churchill three times, in “Churchill and the Generals” in 1979, “The Last Stand” in 1984 and “Hiroshima” in 1995.
He gained wide recognition for his roles in the films “Day of the Jackal” from 1973 and “Bez borders” from 2003. The program “Great Canal Journeys”, broadcast since 2014, was also a great success for him, in which he and his wife sailed on British canals by boat. The program featured open talk by, among others: about women's dementia.
