Explosion of a gas cylinder in a single-family house in Giżycko in Masuria. The resident of the house was taken to hospital with bodily injuries. The force of the explosion was so great that it damaged a neighboring building.
The explosion occurred on Wednesday afternoon on Kajki Street in Giżycko. Grzegorz Zubowicz, deputy district commander of the State Fire Service in Giżycko, informed that the house was not connected to the municipal network and the resident used a gas cylinder.

– The explosion occurred on the first floor. The explosion was so large that the upper floor of the house was almost torn in half. According to the preliminary assessment, the house is only suitable for demolition, but of course decisions must be made by the construction supervision in this respect, said Zubowicz.
One person injured
An approximately 50-year-old man lived in the house where the explosion occurred. He was taken to a hospital in Giżycko with burns to his body and respiratory tract. When the ambulance took him away, he was conscious and assured firefighters that no one else was in the building at the time of the explosion. – Considering the condition of the building, it's truly a miracle that this man survived – admitted the firefighter.
The force of the explosion damaged the neighboring house: its windows cracked and its façade was damaged.
Other services were also at the site of the explosion, and the electricity and water supplies were cut off.
The police will determine what factors led to the explosion.
