The agencies remind that there were street clashes during a protest in Sukhumi last week against the “investment agreement” with Russialegalizing investments by Russian entities in the region and ownership of land and other real estate.
Critics of Abkhazia's Russian-backed leader, Aslan Bzhaniy, oppose this solution. Protesters surrounded the most important buildings occupied by the region's authorities.
Abkhazian opposition rejected Bzhanij's proposal to hold early elections. He was given an ultimatum: to resign from his office by the evening of November 17. In case of refusal, an opposition interim government was announced.

Despite the protests, the leader of the pro-Russian republic maintains that he remains in office and will continue to perform his duties. On Sunday, Aslan Bzhaniya said in an interview with the Tass propaganda agency that during a meeting with the opposition “no compromise could be reached”.
– There is a law under which I am the elected president – said the leader of the unrecognized republic.
Abkhazia has been outside the control of the central government for over 30 years Georgia. Abkhazia's separatist government maintains it is an independent state. A unilateral proclamation on this matter was issued in 1992. Only a few countries, including Russia, recognize the region's independencewhich did so in 2008 after the war with Georgia.
