FBI officers arrested a homeless man from Florida on Wednesday on suspicion of planning to detonate a bomb in front of the New York Stock Exchange.

The New York Times reported that a homeless man is accused of trying to detonate an explosive in order to damage the Stock Exchange building in Manhattan. He is accused of altering radios to act as a trigger mechanism for a planned explosive device.

Harun Abdul-Malik Yener appeared in court for the first time on Wednesday afternoon. This was preceded by a months-long undercover FBI investigation. The man will be held in custody until the trial.

Yener allegedly wanted to join extremist groups to carry out further attacks. However, the indictment indicates that he did not have explosive material because he counted on its delivery by people who turned out to be secret agents.

According to investigators, during a search of the warehouse used by the suspect, sketches for bomb production, watches with timers, integrated circuit boards and other devices that could be used to make an explosive device were found.

According to court documents, the 40-year-old defendant told an FBI informant that he wanted to get involved with an anti-government organization and construct an improvised explosive device. He also advised agents to obtain explosives for the bomb.

“It would be a great blow. Lots of people would support it. They would see it and think, this guy is right,” writes “NYT” about plans to detonate the bomb before Thanksgiving, citing court documents.

Authorities describe the suspect as someone with exuberant and sometimes contradictory statements. He once claimed that he felt comfortable killing people, and another time that he wanted to detonate a bomb at 2 a.m.
